4-0: «I breathed my soul back into me.»

"Renascence"

All I could see from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood;
I turned and looked another way,
And saw three islands in a bay.
So with my eyes I traced the line
Of the horizon, thin and fine,
Straight around till I was come
Back to where I'd started from;
And all I saw from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood.

Over these things I could not see;
These were the things that bounded me;
And I could touch them with my hand,
Almost, I thought, from where I stand.
And all at once things seemed so small
My breath came short, and scarce at all.

But, sure, the sky is big, I said;
Miles and miles above my head;
So here upon my back I'll lie
And look my fill into the sky.
And so I looked, and, after all,
The sky was not so very tall.
The sky, I said, must somewhere stop,
And -- sure enough! -- I see the top!
The sky, I thought, is not so grand;
I 'most could touch it with my hand!
And reaching up my hand to try,
I screamed to feel it touch the sky.

I screamed, and -- lo! -- Infinity
Came down and settled over me;
Forced back my scream into my chest,
Bent back my arm upon my breast,
And, pressing of the Undefined
The definition on my mind,
Held up before my eyes a glass
Through which my shrinking sight did pass
Until it seemed I must behold
Immensity made manifold;
Whispered to me a word whose sound
Deafened the air for worlds around,
And brought unmuffled to my ears
The gossiping of friendly spheres,
The creaking of the tented sky,
The ticking of Eternity.

I saw and heard, and knew at last
The How and Why of all things, past,
And present, and forevermore.
The Universe, cleft to the core,
Lay open to my probing sense
That, sick'ning, I would fain pluck thence
But could not, -- nay!
But needs must suck
At the great wound, and could not pluck
My lips away till I had drawn
All venom out. -- Ah, fearful pawn!
For my omniscience paid I toll
In infinite remorse of soul.

All sin was of my sinning, all
Atoning mine, and mine the gall
Of all regret. Mine was the weight
Of every brooded wrong, the hate
That stood behind each envious thrust,
Mine every greed, mine every lust.

And all the while for every grief,
Each suffering, I crave relief
With individual desire, --
Craved all in vain!
And felt fierce fire
About a thousand people crawl;
Perished with each, -- then mourned for all!

A man was starving in Capri;
He moved his eyes and looked at me;
I felt his gaze, I heard his moan,
And knew his hunger as my own.
I saw at sea a great fog bank
Between two ships that struck and sank;
A thousand screams the heavens smote;
And every scream tore through my throat.

No hurt I did not feel, no death
That was not mine; mine each last breath
That, crying, met an answering cry
From the compassion that was I.
All suffering mine, and mine its rod;
Mine, pity like the pity of God.

Ah, awful weight! Infinity
Pressed down upon the finite Me!
My anguished spirit, like a bird,
Beating against my lips I heard;
Yet lay the weight so close about
There was no room for it without.
And so beneath the weight lay I
And suffered death, but could not die.

Long had I lain thus, craving death,
When quietly the earth beneath
Gave way, and inch by inch, so great
At last had grown the crushing weight,
Into the earth I sank till I
Full six feet under ground did lie,
And sank no more, -- there is no weight
Can follow here, however great.
From off my breast I felt it roll,
And as it went my tortured soul
Burst forth and fled in such a gust
That all about me swirled the dust.

Deep in the earth I rested now;
Cool is its hand upon the brow
And soft its breast beneath the head
Of one who is so gladly dead.
And all at once, and over all
The pitying rain began to fall;
I lay and heard each pattering hoof
Upon my lowly, thatched roof,
And seemed to love the sound far more
Than ever I had done before.
For rain it hath a friendly sound
To one who's six feet underground;
And scarce the friendly voice or face:
A grave is such a quiet place.

The rain, I said, is kind to come
And speak to me in my new home.
I would I were alive again
To kiss the fingers of the rain,
To drink into my eyes the shine
Of every slanting silver line,
To catch the freshened, fragrant breeze
From drenched and dripping apple-trees.
For soon the shower will be done,
And then the broad face of the sun
Will laugh above the rain-soaked earth
Until the world with answering mirth
Shakes joyously, and each round drop
Rolls, twinkling, from its grass-blade top.

How can I bear it; buried here,
While overhead the sky grows clear
And blue again after the storm?
O, multi-colored, multiform,
Beloved beauty over me,
That I shall never, never see
Again! Spring-silver, autumn-gold,
That I shall never more behold!
Sleeping your myriad magics through,
Close-sepulchred away from you!
O God, I cried, give me new birth,
And put me back upon the earth!
Upset each cloud's gigantic gourd
And let the heavy rain, down-poured
In one big torrent, set me free,
Washing my grave away from me!

I ceased; and through the breathless hush
That answered me, the far-off rush
Of herald wings came whispering
Like music down the vibrant string
Of my ascending prayer, and -- crash!
Before the wild wind's whistling lash
The startled storm-clouds reared on high
And plunged in terror down the sky,
And the big rain in one black wave
Fell from the sky and struck my grave.

I know not how such things can be;
I only know there came to me
A fragrance such as never clings
To aught save happy living things;
A sound as of some joyous elf
Singing sweet songs to please himself,
And, through and over everything,
A sense of glad awakening.
The grass, a-tiptoe at my ear,
Whispering to me I could hear;
I felt the rain's cool finger-tips
Brushed tenderly across my lips,
Laid gently on my sealed sight,
And all at once the heavy night
Fell from my eyes and I could see, --
A drenched and dripping apple-tree,
A last long line of silver rain,
A sky grown clear and blue again.
And as I looked a quickening gust
Of wind blew up to me and thrust
Into my face a miracle
Of orchard-breath, and with the smell, --
I know not how such things can be! --
I breathed my soul back into me.

Ah! Up then from the ground sprang I
And hailed the earth with such a cry
As is not heard save from a man
Who has been dead, and lives again.
About the trees my arms I wound;

Like one gone mad I hugged the ground;
I raised my quivering arms on high;
I laughed and laughed into the sky,
Till at my throat a strangling sob
Caught fiercely, and a great heart-throb
Sent instant tears into my eyes;
O God, I cried, no dark disguise
Can e'er hereafter hide from me
Thy radiant identity!

Thou canst not move across the grass
But my quick eyes will see Thee pass,
Nor speak, however silently,
But my hushed voice will answer Thee.
I know the path that tells Thy way
Through the cool eve of every day;
God, I can push the grass apart
And lay my finger on Thy heart!

The world stands out on either side
No wider than the heart is wide;
Above the world is stretched the sky, --
No higher than the soul is high.
The heart can push the sea and land
Farther away on either hand;
The soul can split the sky in two,
And let the face of God shine through.
But East and West will pinch the heart
That can not keep them pushed apart;
And he whose soul is flat -- the sky
Will cave in on him by and by.

Katabasis

so Katabasis [K. ;)] is finally here ... i wished, sighed and pinned for this as Menton began giving us sneak peaks from some of the paintings for his upcoming solo show. and, then, i ultimately, literally asked for this. and i cannot believe it's here now ...

i've backed it (hope to be able to back it even more because this is my kind of pretty and the kind that helps me get to a better place and sort myself out) ... it's the thing about inward journeys. they're always helpful if you dare to take the journey and discover who you were, who you are on the way to who you're becoming.so, please check it, back it if it's your thing and share it. for your consideration i leave you with the stunning kickstarter for Menton3's fab new book, Katabasis!

hemispheres

«All the Hemispheres»

Leave the familiar for a while.

Let your senses and bodies stretch out
Like a welcomed season
Onto the meadows and shores and hills.
Open up to the
Roof.
Make a new water-mark on your excitement
And love.
Like a blooming night flower,
Bestow your vital fragrance of happiness and giving
Upon our intimate assembly.
Change rooms in your mind for a day.
All the hemispheres in existence
Lie beside an equator
In your heart.
Greet Yourself
In your thousand other forms
As you mount the hidden tide and travel
Back home.
All the hemispheres in heaven
Are sitting around a fire chatting
While stitching themselves together
Into the Great Circle inside of
You.

the resistance of grief to reason

«And grief, like love, is resistant to reason.»

this is beautifully written ... i just finished it and realized that for those of us with a family on paper and blood but not on heart this experience is a completely different ball game ... ironically, the title actually works on many levels.

our detachment lends itself to side looks and sneaky remarks behind our backs about all that is - seemingly - lacking in us as children ... and once again in our lives we are portrayed as failing at something within the family dynamic. the reasons do not matter. few want to get to the heart of it. and we do not care about records anymore. we know the truth and that is enough for us. at last.

i wonder were those side looks and sneaky remarks where when we were growing up about all that was lacking from our parental units ... i wonder for a split second if they would have made a difference. and then i move on, not all things in this life can be fixed. and more importantly, i decided a few years ago that i definitely do not want to fix some things anymore. the time for that has come and gone. the moment is gone. and that is ok. it is what it is. i have what i have. they have what they have. we have what we have.

this is beautifully written. i just finished it and felt like a total alien in this world because i will never know what this feels like. that choice was not made by me. it is what it is. and i can't even say that it hurts. it doesn't. not anymore. and i just realized it stopped hurting awhile ago and i didn't even notice it.

and it just hit me: this is what inner peace feels like ... not because everything is neat, proper and fixed. but rather because i have made my peace with the past, learned to live in the present and have no unrealistic expectations for our future as kindred.

it is what it is. and it is not my fault. and i am not failing at anything.

this is beautifully written and i'm sorry for his loss and i'm glad others have such a bond, it gives me hope for the future ... my own and that of the ties i hope to establish with others in my life.

hot air

Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Untitled, Chicago (Grant Park), 1950s

"It is an image of the hot air of the American press (nothing could typify that better than the Chicago Tribune), and of the Windy City, as Chicago is called. This photograph’s allusion to Chicago’s nickname makes it a fitting end to the book, though at first glance the image seems completely unassuming…In fact, Ishimoto pursued those sheets of newspaper for over an hour. There is nothing casual about the photograph. It instills into the book’s ending a “hush profound” like that in which the sound of the cicada seeps into the rock in Basho’s haiku".

done and done

mood for 2014: it doesn't matter if you want it back. you've given it away. so there, done and done.

sometimes you change ever so slowly over the course of a year and then suddenly something happens and all changes fall into place like a tetris line and it's all there, part of your cellular matrix and a new you emerges and it's a beautiful sight to behold.

on simplifying and fighting

«I changed my diet and lifestyle, I cut out as much negativity from my life as I could, I simplified and I fought.»

"i simplified and i fought"  perhaps it's the invisibility of cancer that makes it so easy for people who are battling depression to relate ... perhaps it's the notion that neither set of patients can ever use the word 'cured' and will always have to be hyper vigilant for life. other people tend to not understand what that means, the hyper vigilance that becomes the norm in our lives after the onslaught of depression. since discharge i have been building myself from the ground up and have found incredible strength from some blogs from the cancer community. so tell me, why not be here now?!

trusting

«Life awaits. Meaningful friendships, inspiring work, independence, your place in the world. They're all just waiting outside your door. Now imagine if that door was locked. No key, no side exit, you're trapped, while everybody else blossoms around you. That's what it feels like growing up with a mental illness... We all have to figure out who we are beyond our diagnosis. It's a long process that begins with learning how to trust our own minds again.»

sometimes, it's good to be reminded that we are not alone ... and we do not stay broken forever!

at the end of the path

in the end, the hardest paths will bring us to the most beautiful landscapes

weathering the distance

“It's true: lives do drift apart for no obvious reason. We're all busy people,we can't spend our time simply trying to stay in touch. The test of a friendship is if it can weather these inevitable gaps.”
― William Boyd, Any Human Heart

some do. some don't. it's essentially one of the tests for things and people that matter. the thing that so changed about me in 2013: i stopped grieving for some losses and some distance and understood they were inevitable, they were necessary to make room for other people and other relationships. above all, i realized that i lost very little when i looked long and hard at situations. quite the contrary, i came out winning by not having some people in my life anymore. bye bye.

mutability

on the mutability of all things. things break down. change to another state of being. life goes through us and always leaves its mark. learn your lessons.just flow like water and don't fear change. embrace it.

last.year ....

last.year. i found my lightness of self again.

last.year. i found the fucktastic shades of red lover in me. and the stockings lover in me. and the frilly lace lingerie lover in me. i found many lovers in me. it was epic.

last.year. i found beloved old parts of me resurfacing bearing the marks of the past 11 years but not in a bad way. more.mature. more.complete. more.complex. more.intricate. more.layered. more.the.best.parts.of.me. essentially.

last.year. i regained my center, my footing and discovered that my core is stronger and more cohesive than i thought.

last.year. i stood at the D Day landing beaches in Normandy on a cold winter night and morning and had a resounding perspective of life of self. you can't stand in a place where so many died and not feel small. so small.

last.year. i let art guide me. Mnemosyne and Melancholia took me by the hand because i allowed them to do so and changed me and the ride is just beginning. (wait till they're both framed and hanging and i see them every day on my walls). i had missed my deep dark passions, they always take me to better places and make me a better person.

last.year. i let people in more than i used to.

last.year. i became way better at getting rid of baggage and unwanted people. i also became way better at blocking outside noise. i have my life. others have theirs. distance and perspective are essential.

last.year. i figured out some hangups and worked really hard on my.self. to overcome them. awareness and acknowledgment are where change begins. you can't change what you don't acknowledge.

last.year. i truly forgave myself at last for my suicide attempts.

last.year. i finally fell truly.madly.deeply. in love with myself.

last.year. i resumed at last and the story keeps writing itself...

tracking

44Flood's Lust changed me. it allowed me to break down barriers and get back to timeless parts of my.self. ... while still in the process of analyzing all those changes this comes along. 44Flood's Tome 2 changed me. it allowed me to find my focus, my ground. reconstruction, renewal of my.self. and i haven't even held it in my hands yet. so tell me, why not be here now?!

[it's important to keep track of the things that helped you get to a better place. of the work that brings up the important questions of your.self. to give credit. to say thanks. gratitude. it's a thing. so is clarification. this matters. period.point.blank.]

humanity

“You say you're 'depressed' - all i see is resilience. You are allowed to feel messed up and inside out. It doesn't mean you're defective - it just means you're human.” David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas)

we all complete

things that matter ... one of the biggest joys and comforts for me last year was my return to Never Let Me Go: the book (at each reading it has become more and more of a favorite), the movie and the score ... this undoes me. this clears all the clutter. leaving only that which matters before me. i grow as a human being every single time i go back to it. i've reread it twice this year. it matters more and more now than it did when it was released.

this is the simple premise: time is fleeting. we all complete. what really matters is really real, be it 5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months, 5 years, 50 years. fucking up is bound to happen. fix it. change course. change your.self. change. grow. evolve. love. live. love your.self. forgiveness and acceptance do make a difference. but above all, don't time and energy and your.self with stuff that doesn't matter. so tell me, why not be here now?!
[ps: read the book, see the movie, if you're so inclined listen to the score.]

the small quiet room

“Most things will be okay eventually, but not everything will be. Sometimes you'll put up a good fight and lose. Sometimes you'll hold on really hard and realize there is no choice but to let go. Acceptance is a small, quiet room.”

― Cheryl Strayed, Tiny Beautiful Things

acceptance is a small, quiet room that when we walk out of has a thunderous effect in our lives. to stop wasting time and energy and self with the things that i could not change was one of the best decisions in my life.

one laugh at a time

long read ... necessary read ... important read on grief, coping, dealing and healing. on coming back to life again after journeys of the soul ... a.laugh.at.a.time!

please read: The Secret Life of Grief

i had ...

lovely ... in the end, after facing the worst days of the depression, acknowledging your frailty and that you will always be fragile and having depressive tendencies will be the only honest answer ... and then, realize that for the rest of your life you're either working on a relapse or you're working on recovery. i personally am very grateful about my black dog. it saved my soul and my life, strange as it may seem.
[would have preferred another analogy rather than a dog but i'm letting go of that]

softness

“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.” Kurt Vonnegut

so with him. pass on ever being angry and bitter. yes, it's easy. it's also shallow and leads nowhere and brings nothing to one's life.

time

"it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.” - F.Scott Fitzgerald
(Danny Lyon Highway 49 from Jackson to Yazoo City, 1964)

circus

“We’re all going to die, all of us, what a circus. That alone should make us love each other, but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing.” Charles Bukowski

apparently love is too big a thing, it's easier to aim low and be small ... pass on this, i'm here to grow and evolve and *love*. cheers! fed up with people holding on to small things and wanting others to be come down to their level ...

Matter

“What matters is precisely this; the unspoken at the edge of the spoken.” Virginia Woolf (diary entry dated 21 July 1912)
