You are...

You are allowed to be alive. You are allowed to be somebody different. You are allowed to not say goodbye to anybody or explain a single thing to anyone, ever.” Augusten Burroughs

Lava

“To hell, to hell with balance! I break glasses; I want to burn, even if I break myself. I want to live only for ecstasy. Nothing else affects me. Small doses, moderate loves, all half-shades, leave me cold. I like extravagance, heat. Letters which give the postman a stiff back to carry, books which overflow from their covers, sexuality which bursts the thermometer! I’m neurotic, perverted, destructive, fiery, dangerous - lava, inflammable, unrestrained.” Anaïs Nin

5 Years

in a few hours it will be 5 - five! - long years since I was discharged from my 6 - six! - psychotherapy course. I started therapy in early november and finished in late november. I've always appreciated that temporal marker. the way it reflects such a full cycle.

my remit at the start of the first session was simple: if I liked my therapist, if I felt we could work as a team, I would see it through no matter what. come what may, I'd only stop it the day she said it was time to do so. I acknowledged for the first time the absolute horrid mess I was in for the vast majority of my life and that my decisions and judgment in this area were not in my best interest as my suicide attempts clearly spelled out.

but discharge is a mere marker. the recovery process goes beyond simply saying 'you don't have to come here anymore. in fact, you will never ever need therapy again in your life if you stick to your «self».' like I was told.

in february of 2008, my therapist told me that the time had come for us to start slowly prepping my discharge; I daren't ask her when that would happen. my whole journey had been organic, so I suspected so would be the preparation for that moment. months came and went and one cold november day, the 27th, I waltzed into her study, we started talking and in the middle of that conversation, she took a deep breath and said 'this is it, ana' and started crying.

and I just knew, I knew I was going to lose my confidant, the person who knows me - still - like nobody else on this earth. the woman who through the many years between us stopped being just my doctor and became my doctor and my friend.

and I also knew that this was a good thing. this was a necessary thing. and eventually we would be able to move towards our friendship after a cooling off period that is necessary so that we don't maintain the session habits of me unburdening myself on her. we started doing that this year. and this year, I don't miss my doctor. this year, I miss my friend. so we're on track here.

she cried honestly, deeply and earnestly and I saw in her lengthy tears how much she cared for me. how much I meant to her. she is the one person who never failed me. in any form, shape or manner. but in that moment, I saw the depth of her love and respect for me. and I knew that come what may, she would always have my back.

discharge is a confusing time. there are no answers. you slowly start rebuilding and living a life that isn't ruled by depression and its dark impulses. when the vast majority of your life has been lived in those shadows this is no easy task. you have to reinvent yourself. figure out who you are without the depression thrown into the mix. but at the same time, you have to keep yourself in check because there is no cure. I'll always be fragile and with depressive tendencies. it's my natural blueprint and one that I have to work hard every day so that it doesn't take hold. my melancholia is fab, my solitude is fab. my depression and loneliness are heart and soul murderers.

there is no manual. you make it up as you go along. and as you change, people around you change. and after 6 years in therapy, I sadly found out that some clung to that to fool themselves into thinking that their life was better, because hey at least they weren't in therapy (but they desperately needed it).

so after discharge came the first wave of serious life upheavals. things changed. relationships changed. some people stayed. some people left. some people came in. I continued to sort through things. connecting the dots. crossing my tts and dotting my iis. figuring what had been lost. what I wanted back. what had been found. what was a keeper. and what had to go.

this sounds way more simple than it is. it's been years of one step forward. two steps back. 25 miles forward. a sudden halt during a long ass time. all of it necessary. and this year at last I arrived at the crux of it. it's not been pretty. it's not been easy. but it's been important. and I feel a «self» I hadn't felt in years. I got back parts of myself that I thought were long gone. they're not as they were. they're more refined and more reflective of me.

I have made my peace with the things that I cannot change. and I have worked hard to change the ones that I can change. but most importantly, I've fell in love with myself like there is no tomorrow. and it was about damn time.

sometimes, I falter. sometimes, I waver. sometimes, I quiver. but today. 5 years later. I am more me than I have ever been. I compromise on common ground but not on self. take me or leave me. I spent too much time and money to figure out who I am to cater to anybody else other than myself. this doesn't make me the most popular girl (I tend to be too direct and most don't like that). but this makes me brutally honest and somebody who doesn't play games. this security is to me a plus and an asset.

I keep changing. my changes are my own. sometimes they reflect themselves in my relationships. but it's not anybody else, it's me. and people either keep up or they miss the ride. they need to trust me, that if it's personal, I will always talk to them. so if I don't say anything. please. cut the drama and stop trying to make things about yourself. because that will end badly for you. nobody takes center stage in my life. and attempts to do so will not be tolerated. but what others do and think is out of my hands. and I'd love to say that I care. but the blunt truth is: I really don't! if people think something about me without asking me about it or after years knowing me, then they don't know me at all. and I'm better off without them. period.point.blank! good riddance.

I can't set my own pace according to other people's pace. and I understand that the past 12 months (I had an epiphany last november, on the 27th! thank you Indochine!) have not been easy for the people in my life as I am fully aware that I have been elusive, so to speak, but I had to take a personal journey and figure a lot of things out. this was necessary.

since the summer I could feel, sense that heavy doors were starting to be shut, as old halls had been neatly organized and I gazed upon old friends/demons that had to be put to rest because their time had come to an end. they reigned supreme for far too long. and right now they're a hindrance. remnants of a self and a life that no longer exists. and one that I wish to be rid of for good. because I want new dreams and new mistakes and new life.

these are times of ends and beginnings. and some ends require more than fortitude. they require solitude because what is been let go of is so personal, that nobody else will ever get it. that requires solitude. and there is no way to explain this to other people. you have either been there or you haven't. that simple.

the past months have given me a sense of closure. of a job well done. and I reach this anniversary on a completely different page. and I know I will continue to change. to grow. to evolve. and I also know I will fuck up. and I will restart. change direction. find new ground. work on being me. more truly and more strangely and more completely.

I remain a work in progress. at last a true survivor. a story that keeps writing itself ...

I am ana. I am 39. five years ago I was discharged from therapy. five years ago my life finally began ...

love from a broken woman working on her togetherness ;)

selfhood and turning points

just went through the article at the end of this blog and it touches on many points on why antidepressants were never for me (and i speak from experience, they gave me 9 hellish months, an additional suicide attempt and the only time in my life where i actually thought i was losing my mind and a full disconnect with my self!) ... and i suspect that they are not for anybody else who is haunted by the grand questions in life ...

what they remove from self is far greater than most people realize, and for those who want to be comfortably numb that is by and large acceptable from what i witness on a regular basis, for others - like me - though it is the one thing that is not negotiable in the wave of a very complicated and frail state of mental health ...

3 years into therapy i finally went into an issue that due to its magnitude i avoided dealing until i had a bigger grasp on my feet. eventually i went there and whatever hell i thought i was going to unleash it palled in comparison to the actual time. in some ways, it was probably even harder than the beginning precisely because i had already achieved some balance. the blow i received was so brutal that it landed me squarely on my knees again and on suicide mode again. my therapist was so scared for my safety for a few months that she brought up calling a psychiatrist friend of hers and putting me back on antidepressants for awhile because i was, and i will quote her, 'in pure agony' ... my reply was simple and unflinching «i'd rather be in pain, i'd rather feel all that i am feeling, i'd rather - for better for for worse - go through my emotions, i know what it is like to not feel anything when on the meds, doesn't work for me, i'll take the pain» ... and so i did, and i spiraled hard, and i bottomed out, and i was reminded once again of what a living hell was. and i also overcame ... slowly and surely, a millimeter at a time, i reclaimed my footing once again.

that time in therapy ended up being a major turning point for me, at the end of those months, i finally went from having appointments twice a week for 3 and a half years to having appointments once a week ... was it rough?? yes. was it one of the lowest moments in my life?? yes. would it have been better if i had gone through it without getting hit with the full blast of all that seemingly unending pain, grief and sorrow?? no. that moment showed me who i could become in the face of my depression and my personal history. it was as life defining as my decision to finally call the woman who would go on to become my therapist and who taught me all about trusting another person. that was the moment when i finally became a survivor ...

antidepressants might be necessary in some situations (they are a must in specific scenarios of mental disease, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) but they should always be taken with great care and preferably alongside with proper therapy and not as a standalone therapy as they so often are and people are left to their own devices for years on end, when by design antidepressants shouldn't be taken for long periods of time (except in specific conditions and part of a drug regimen) ... there are no real answers found inside a pill bottle, but if you dare to face yourself and all your emotions you might just find out who you truly are ... but sadly too often there aren't enough conversations with people who have been to hell and back and can give proper insight into the experience, so that people can make truly informed decisions about the treatment of their mental illness ...

«This book won’t settle those debates, but it does speak to them. Twenty-five years after the introduction of Prozac, we are still collectively attempting to figure out what an appropriate use of medication would look like, in our culture and in our individual lives. We are trying to figure out what our sadness and pain mean — if they mean anything at all — and when they attain the status of illness. We’re trying to figure out when to turn to pills, when to go another route, and how we might be able to tell. … Good answers to the big questions about medication are likely to proceed from careful attention to the actual experiences of the people who have faced them.»

Take 5

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day ... as a suicide survivor who is lucky to be here i can only tell you that each one of has his/her burden to bear and all you can do is be really (t)here for those you love or even just barely know ... it can make a difference ... nobody else can *fix* us, prevention doesn't mean fixing others, that's not anybody's job, prevention means not looking the other way when you know deep down something is wrong with somebody, and no, you don't have to say anything ... so, tell me, why not be here now?! today, take 5 and think about it ...

Breath of Bones

I just finished the last installment of Breath of Bones and and, i must urge once again that you get this!

as i mentioned before, this 3 part mini-series should be on everybody's radar that is into quality writing and unexpected treasures. it's one of the best things i read in recent times. the art is delightful, the writing is poignant and personal. impossible not to love this. so, what are you waiting for?! seriously, tell me?! this one is one of those truly classic series and it's still up for grabs so go, go, go!

On speech and battles

«But one thing I didn't fail to do was to pay attention to everything I endured, so that I could help someone, anyone, to have a more tolerable experience in their own fight.»

this ... this right here is why everybody who has faced and/or is facing overwhelming fights needs to speak up ... you're never know who you're going to help and/or who might come to help you ... always.speak.up.because.you.are.not.alone!

my decision to be verbal about my mental health struggles was a non decision. from the get go, once i made the decision to call the woman who would go on to become my therapist, i also decided that the person who always said «i'm ok. everything is fine.» had to go. i would not have my depression hurdled at me as some sort of veiled insult and i would not have anybody whisper about it behind my back. they could talk behind my back but no whispering, this would be a owned truth. after decades of lying about my burden and a spectacular life implosion, i had done it all, i had tried it all. except for absolute transparency (although the absolute entry on suicide was never published because after i wrote it, i felt such unbearable sadness that i realized it had to be written but it should never be published.)

some people never understood it (it's now a handy tool for accessing people. if they're uncomfortable with somebody else owning up the darkest truth about their life, and the one that changed you, they're not worth the time!) ... but over the course of the years something amazing happened ... i saw the effect, felt it, that this ownership gave to others. i've seen some people giving the first steps to owning their voice and their story, and realizing this is doable. that you can overcome. and all it took was to hear 'you're not alone' ...

so ... whatever happens ... speak!

Lust

so, this arrived this morning ... as some of you know I have been long *lusting* for this but as with all things precious, the first moments should be spent in silence and away from the world and that's why I am only now mentioning it, late at night ... and these are just a few immediate thoughts, the piece needs a few more passages and thought. and I fear I won't even begin to do it justice with this.

right off the bat, I can tell you that pictures do not do the material and the book itself justice. it is indeed a work of art and content. there's a delicate balance at play throughout that truly elevates the narratives: verbal and visual alike.

those who know me a bit better know I don't like easy, accessible things and Lust delivers brutally on this front. in case somebody might be missing the point, let me further clarify: this is a good thing! it's one of the most combative pieces I've had walk into my life in a *long* time. it requires - nay, demands! - time and multiple passes. it is in many ways the embodiment of a commitment. you get as good as you give. and if you don't commit, it's just not going to happen.

also, another thing that struck me: there is no clutter, verbal or visual. the whole book is essentially the definition of A game for each person involved. thus, it's no wonder I found myself thinking a lot about the theory of omission on my first pass. it was an instinctive thought and one I couldn't shake as I walked away to let that first pass sink in. this is rare and something which very few can pull off. but it's there. for me, it was in every page. in the underlying security with which the subject matter is handled and the way it was negotiated that allow for all involved to truly let the crux - Lust, in this instance - to shine through. in this fashion, their deep and complex approach to a vice that is usually reduced to its mere surface value and never fully explored as a more complex entity and the power of which can be harnessed to propel the person to greater heights is never overdone. as the sorely missed jhonn balance of Coil once said «...it just is!»

«If a writer of prose knows enough of what he is writing about he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of an ice-berg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water. A writer who omits things because he does not know them only makes hollow places in his writing.» Ernest Hemingway

I also felt it deeply in another aspect of the book: its dignity. these are not shallow, empty, surface driven thoughts about the vice which is perhaps the most over simplified of all of them. this is a work that sets its aim a lot higher, and makes no apologies for its high standard. it's deep, soulful, intentional, thoughtful, inspired and inspiring. the kind of book that you will find yourself quoting or picking up over the years. it is timeless in so many ways.

this is the beginning of the Vice series, which I consider to be one of the most exciting publishing projects I've seen in awhile, but this, is not for everybody and I suspect that unless you're haunted by some aspects of life and self that some of the aspects of this endeavor will never reveal themselves fully. I guess that's one of the reasons 44Flood's projects in general have resonated so much with me, they have led me back to places I thought were gone from my sights. it's always nice to find other people asking some of the same questions and negotiating their journey in such a creative fashion, because they help me on my own journey. and as some of you know I am constantly questioning self, especially my self, that has seen quite the journey and here I am at another stage of it.

and I can't wait to go through each volume and then to go through the whole series as one piece because I suspect that will change quite a few things for me. but for now I will need more time with Lust, to fully step into the worlds put forth and to inspect every corner of it as well as my own mind in that process. and this is how you change, how you grow and how you evolve. I negotiated 6 years of therapy through art; it saw me through the roughest moments. it kept me together at moments when I thought there would be no stepping out from that darkness. from the get go, my amazing therapist who quickly read who she had in front of her, was adamant that art, literature, music were my lifelines and they should not be given up of no matter what. I gave up a lot of stuff to pay for therapy, but some things were always around. and when the time came and she pushed me to get back to post-graduate studies because she felt research was an important part of me and I needed to get back to it. and in case you doubted how amazing and committed my therapist was: as a testimony of her amazing heart, she forewent her fees for me to pay for post-graduate studies, because I couldn't pay for all of it. this is how important art is to me.

last year found me out of sync with my own internal pace post-discharge from therapy, it's not that I stopped researching, it's that I stopped asking myself some questions in the wake of a detour in my life and i set certain passions aside. i mistook the background noise around me with my life and that was a mistake which has been corrected.

but all things have their reason and their own time, and I know now I needed to get lost once again, because in that space in between I ran into new things that have led me to sorely missed places of my inner life. there was a fractal moment: the vice series announcement. it came at a very difficult moment (as in, i missed out on the kickstarter because being a freelancer means that sometimes your life isn't your own in some ways, but it so is your own in others) but it was a game changer and a wake-up call. and that is the power of art and when you find art that speaks to you, that's the rabbit hole you need to go down.

as most know, kindness and gratitude play a big part in my life. so, heartfelt thanks to 44Flood for breathing life into this project and putting it out. my deepest appreciation to the collective that is Steve Niles, Menton3, Ben Templesmith and Kasra Ghanbari for this work. It is appreciated, it is loved and it makes a difference. looking forward for the remaining volumes.

also, I really have to thank Tyler Crane at 44Flood for all the replies, the information, time and attention about any and all things related to orders. he's a real gem!

Pentimento

«Old paint on canvas, as it ages, sometimes becomes transparent. When that happens it is possible, in some pictures, to see the original lines: a tree will show through a woman's dress, a child makes way for a dog, a large boat is no longer on an open sea. That is called pentimento because the painter "repented," changed his mind. Perhaps it would as well to say that the old conception, replaced by a later choice, is a way of seeing and then seeing again.
That is all I mean about the people in this book. The paint has aged now and I wanted to see what was there for me once, what is there for me now.» Lillian Helllman (Pentimento)

in my life as in her book ... change ... pause ... take stock ... and then move on! ;)

a sense of wonder

i wonder sometimes if the people in our life who opted out of loving us properly like they were supposed to do knew in advance of the brutal effects of their actions for the rest of our lives, if they knew all that would they have behaved differently?!

what they make us live with. what we bring into each relationship that most people don't. what is destroyed decades later by the seeds of their ill loving. the ongoing cycle of destruction just because they couldn't get past what they wanted and tuned into allowing us to thrive exactly the way we are.

above all, how they effectively have made connection with another person the most painful and complicated thing in our lives. and it's not fair that from the get go the game is rigged and that what already isn't always clear cut and easy becomes essentially like living in a landmine filled area. for both us and the other person. and the courage it takes to tackle that ...

i wonder sometimes, if they knew then, would it have mattered?! would they have changed?! would they have dared to love us properly ... or it wouldn't have mattered at all, and they would have done it all just the same.

now, it doesn't matter, it's too late now ... it's just all so sad ... what gets lost, what gets damaged still in the wake of their path of destruction ... and the energy we need to have to constantly keep that lingering darkness out of our lives and not let it affect our present and our future ... i don't think some - most?! - people understand what that it's like ...

but the alternative isn't a valid option, too much has been destroyed, too much has been already taken from us ... enough now. so, we show up, and rise and rise again. and it's not always easy, or pretty ... but it is!

golden mend

“When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold......They believe that when something's suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.” - Barbara Bloom

«I needed this reminder today, that our scars, our history, make us more beautiful.» Joanna S. Montgomery (@hellojomo on twitter, image below from her twitter account / http://hellojomo.com/)

Joanna is the proud mother of a 19 month baby girl and fighting cancer since the day her daughter was born (her cancer was found during her C-section) ... a little reminder to others that what they perceive as a reminder of our (previous or current) «state of brokenness» is indeed just proof that we have fought/are fighting, have survived and are surviving, rebuild ourselves stronger and are thriving not despite those fixed cracks but rather in spite of them ... love & light!

touching base

touched base with my psychotherapist to send out love due a specific date. the exchange was exactly the conversation i needed to have at this specific moment in time! sometimes in the midst of other people's messes present in my life i forget that i'm thriving! those messes are not mine, that's not me, and my decisions to strictly regulate traffic, in a manner of speaking, in my life were great ones. in fact, i had begun doing that a couple of years ago. i just resumed that momentum after a break to see things from a distance and gain perspective. everything has a time, a purpose, a rhyme and a reason, sometimes it just needs some time to clarify itself.

can't believe it will be 5 years post-discharge this winter ... she remains proud of me handling it all so well on my own (but then again, her parting words on discharge were 'you will never need therapy again in your life!'). i learned my lessons and i remain watchful and vigilant every day. i am a survivor!

Time

time. we need time and don't even realize it. we need time to lose ourselves, because at a very deep level we know that will be the only way we will ever truly find ourselves - more truly and more strange - again.

but while time heals it does not wait and disorientation sets in and we lose perspective and stress out about losing ourselves. and during that time people who lack the necessary tools or natural sensitivity to decode us mistake that person for who we are.

so one day we wake up and our life feels clouded and covered with an emotional patine that is not our own, that is not enough, too simplistic, too simple, too filled with otherness and not realness. and we feel that the time has come, it is at hand, and we proceed because our *self* lies in waiting. and for that we need more time ...

time to not just stand up at last once again, but to stand tall. time to grow, evolve and embrace change.

time to see the signs all around you and realize that things are finally at an end and a new stage is here to stay.

time.to.finally.let.go.

and suddenly just like that everything changed ... today was very good!

Skynet

and the war on Skynet has officially began ... i shall be over in the corner holding my 'mechas don't poach animals to extinction' and 'mechas don't kill for pleasure' signs ... the ones closest to me know where i stand on this. i love the assumption that they will wipe us out. really?! do you have a crystal ball?! where does this practical knowledge come from?! because if it comes from movies, you need a fucking life. i personally believe they would make way better decisions than 'humans' do. but finally the biggest 21st century debate is underway ... let us at last discuss sentience!

Awareness

one of the best depression awareness campaigns i've seen in a long time ...

i spent years saying «i'm fine». towards the end, right before the epic life implosion, i said it while sobbing uncontrollably. i said it in the middle of full blown panic attacks where i could not move nor breathe correctly. i said it covered in my own blood. i said it after suicide attempts. but hey i was *fine*, it's like if i said time an insane amount of times it would come true. (*it did not*.) and every time i said it i hoped people would really see me, just how far gone i was. how every day was an exercise in finding a way to keep going without further harming myself. very few did. i can count with the fingers in one hand the number of people who replied to that statement «no, you're not!». and that's why those are still in my life and a few others are not.

when people are engulfed in darkness what they say and what is going on are two different things. sometimes getting involved can save a life. don't just hear - listen! don't just see - watch! be really there and really see the person standing in front of you ... sometimes it's all right there, just not in words!

8.6.13

On myths, purpose and self

nailed it! Kris Carr is a cancer thriver! it's funny how people who have faced the darkest places see things oh so clearly ... life is so much more than what we do. without who we are, it's meaningless. there will always be more work, but there might not be more 'you'! for me lately this has been the issue more and more ... i love what i do, i rock at what i do, it's by no means who i am, and i don't want it to be my definition because simply put i am so much more than that. i am also way more than the depression thriver and the suicide survivor. but those are huge parts of me: they're the ones that don't let me forget what is truly important in this life. and it's not work. ;)

«But here's the rub. When our purpose is external, we may never find it. If we tie our purpose or meaning to our vocation, goal or an activity, we're more than likely setting ourselves up for suffering down the line.

Your purpose has nothing to do with what you do. There, I said it. Your purpose is about discovering and nurturing who you truly are, to know and love yourself at the deepest level and to guide yourself back home when you lose your way. That's it. Everything else is your burning passion, your inspired mission, your job, your love-fueled hobby, etc. Those things are powerful and essential, but they're not your purpose. Your purpose is much bigger than that.»

ownership

"Loving ourselves through the process of owning our story is the bravest thing we'll ever do."Brené Brown

after a profound depression spanning well over 20 years, 3 suicide attempts, years of eating disorders, 6 years of psychotherapy, discharge of therapy a little over 4 years ago, some other not so good stuff, some other so so stuff, some other good stuff, some other really fab stuff. the story that i began finally owning up to after i began therapy is intricate and layered. owning it all made me stronger than i ever thought i could be. *step into the light*

«Daughter» by Nicole Blackman

“one day i'll give birth to a tiny baby girl
and when she's born she'll scream and i'll make sure she never stops.
i will kiss her before i lay her down
and will tell her a story so she knows how it is and how it must be for her to survive.

i'll tell her about the power of water, the seduction of paper
the promise of gasoline, and the hope of blood.

i'll teach her to shave her eyebrows and mark her skin.
i'll teach her that her body is her greatest work of art.

i'll tell her to light things on fire and keep them burning.
i'll teach her that the fire will not consume her, that she must take it and use it.

i'll tell her to be tri-sexual, to try anything, to sleep with, fight with, pray with anyone,
just as long as she feels something.
i'll help her to do her best work when it rains.
i'll tell her to reinvent herself every 28 days.

i'll teach her to develop all her selves
the courageous ones, the smart ones, the dreaming ones, the fast ones
i'll teach her that she has an army inside her that can save her life.

i'll tell her to say FUCK like people say THE
and when people are shocked to ask them why they so fear a small quartet of letters.

i'll make sure she carries a pen so she can take down the evidence.
if she has no paper, i'll teach her to write everything down on her tongue,
to write it on her thighs.

i'll help her see that she will not find God
or salvation in a dark brick building built by dead men.

i'll explain to her it's better to regret the things she has done than the things she hasn't.
i'll teach her to write her manifestos on cocktail napkins.

i'll say she should make men lick her enterprise.
i'll teach her to talk hard. i'll tell her that her skin is the most beautiful dress she will ever wear.

i'll tell her that people must earn the right to use her nickname,
that forced intimacy is an ugly thing.
i'll make her understand that she is worth more with her clothes on.

i'll tell her that when the words finally flow too fast and she has no use for a pen
that she must quit her job, run out of the house in her bathrobe, leaving the door open.
i'll teach her to follow the words.

i'll tell her to stand up and head for the door after she makes love.
when he asks her to stay she'll say she's got to go.

i'll tell her that when she first bleeds when she is a woman,
to go up to the roof at midnight, reach her hands up to the sky and scream.

i'll teach her to be whole, to be holy,
to be so much that she doesn't even need me anymore.

i'll tell her to go quickly and never come back.
i will make her stronger than me.

i'll say to her never forget what they did to you
and never let them know you remember.
i'll say to her never forget what they did to you
and never let them know you remember.
i'll say to her never forget what they did to you
and never let them know you remember.”

"expiration date"

it's easy to be happy when everything is picture perfect ... most decide that only then will they be happy, that only this or that falls into place will they do this or that or have time for what and those who really matter, and then later they wonder where time and people went ... well, time went to your delaying of 'allowing yourself to be happy' (or to your constant whining and insisting on looking back and holding onto the past, good luck with that, just don't bother me with it anymore, i'm done with people stuck in a rut because they choose to do so) and the people went because they have better things to do with their time than to wait for your terms of any relationship.

most fail to understand that learning how to be happy, how to enjoy being happy in between life's twists and turns, pitfalls and punches that's the real deal. true happiness because it just is, and doesn't depend on any external condition to exist. in those moments no matter how much crap might be going on, your life is very much your own and one can clearly see what really matters, who really matters and where our time, energy and self must be geared towards.

i've seen one too many expiration dates up close and personal. been through too much. happy is not tomorrow. happy is in the here and now as far as i can have a say in it, and i do have a say in how i feel. in the past few months something changed, snapped, clicked, fell into place ... i don't know what happened, i don't why, i feel it and know it's real and that's enough for me, it's a state of flux and grace, a being happier than i had been in awhile.

happy is sitting on a swing facing a beach where hundreds died at midnight and fully realizing the meaning of «ça ne s'explique pas, ça ce vit» ... so hello hints and no explanations (i don't owe them to anybody) and living ... everything else, not my bag ...

Fallout

13 years to the day ... somewhere along the line it didn't heal (don't think it ever will) but living with it slowly but surely became easier and somehow then it became doable ...

if you ever decide to tell your child you'd rather see him or her dead than happy in his or her own terms make sure you're ready for the fallout from that, because you will never ever be able to repair the relationship and have access to your child. you might have a relationship but one that has a great wall of china inside it. and it will never ever disappear.

more importantly some children will wander, shatter, disintegrate and hit absolute rock bottom and then discover that there is life after death. that all they should've done immediately was to die, for a little bit. because death was the beginning that they needed to their life. and then some children will discover that after what looked like an absolute end you can live and thrive and be happy without any semblance of parents in his or her life ... you just have to let go and realize you can't hold on to what you never really had.

Letters for Noah

*warning: might be triggering*
*warning: might be a beacon of light*

what does the the mother of a depressed 12 year old do when she finds out her son is planning to kill himself?! she asks the world to remind him that there is life after depression, there is light, that life is waiting ... and the world replied ...

news story here: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57573381/how-letters-from-strangers-saved-a-teens-life/

also: the amazing resource that is To Write Love On Her Arms has a similar project, called Letters of Encouragement, where people write to people in treatment centers to remind them that they are not alone.

skin

safety net don't hold me now
in this hole i've fallen down
secret home i've made and found
a new way to breathe

skin come off
i've had enough,

in the city, you find pain
and the people you see there
that remind you of your own
let it go

skin come off
i've had enough

and in the sickness
you have faith
and in the thickness
you'll find me
finally

the fleet leader

2 years to the day ... our lady Discovery bowed out ever so gracefully as she landed at NASA's Kennedy Space Center wrapping up STS-133 ... in the end, she would be the gal who would work the longest and the hardest, as she did more space missions (39) than any of the sister ships, and for her efforts she was - and rightfully so - the first of the space gals to retire ... the true fleet leader, she deserved it!

sonic booms at 3:54 ... the gals' ever so precious landing knock knock!

from 6:46 onward there's exquisite flawless landing footage!

bowing out

who we are, how we deal, how we live life (whatever time we have) is a choice! anybody who says otherwise is lying to him/herself (perfectly acceptable, whatever floats their boat) and wants others to believe that lie (yeah, nice try! pass! let's all be grown up and call things by their names, and yes, that includes our decisions!)

please read this article about a reporter with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) who is facing life's toughest deadlinehttp://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/09/reporters-deadline-book/1974989/

strength

"The curse which lies upon marriage is that too often the individuals are joined in their weakness rather than in their strength, each asking from the other instead of finding pleasure in giving. It is even more deceptive to dream of gaining through the child a plenitude, a warmth, a value, which one is unable to create for oneself; the child brings joy only to the woman who is capable of disinterestedly desiring the happiness of another, to one who without being wrapped up in self seeks to transcend her own existence."
Simone de Beauvoir [The Second Sex (1949)]

oh snap ... nails all the common delusions of marriage and parenthood ... if you're not doing it for the right reasons, don't do it! but sadly too many people only think of themselves and never of others, and it's most painful when they don't think of their children. but hey, feed my fucking ego, right?! that's why i had you! fuck and off, sorry excuse for parents!

crazy draws

«We are drawn to people like this in life, the crazy ones whose love is often too much to handle at once, because they make us feel alive. They are easy to get drawn to, they burn so hot that it can turn even the most stoic among us into moths. And it is only because that need for love, that unhinged desire to feel and be felt in every way and not sacrifice an ounce of life for propriety or not being labeled crazy, that is something all of us want on some level. We want to be pinched and know that we feel, know that we hurt, know that our highs and lows can still be thrilling and new. And though we are often quick to reproach a woman who demonstrates the spontaneity and rebelliousness that might have been sexy on a beat poet or charming guitar player, we must remember that caring too much and wanting too much are only symptoms of being human. To label something you love as crazy is to take away its magic and its meaning. Not everything we don’t understand is crazy, but writing off a wonderful person for being too intoxicated with love most certainly is.» Chelsea Fagan

“The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. No, the true measure of a man is this: how quickly can he respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give.” Philip K. Dick

«The art of asking»

“if you love people enough, they'll give you everything.” Anthony Martignetti

so, Amanda Palmer's TED talk is here ... in the end, it's about how you give yourself to the people in your life ... you do get what you give, but even when people are not able to give, it's about who you decide to be and give from yourself especially if you're not getting anything back. that's the true measure of who you are in your core ...
